Different Labradoodle Coats 2

Other photo galleries:

Dudley (right) at 6 months is the least shaggy pup I have yet seen a photo of. I hope to be able to report on his adult coat when he’s grown more.

Henry (below left) was also a very smooth pup (see page 1) but by 12 months was a short coated but shaggy dog.

Claude and his sister live on the Gold Coast and run a lot. They were selected as short coated dogs and their coats may well be thin because of their environment. The same dogs in Melbourne or North America and leading a more sedentary existence might retain a thicker undercoat.

First Cross Doodles have been describes as "shaggy dogs from central casting” and F1 Doodles have been chosen to play “Sandy” in the stage play Annie both in Australia and in the

The majority of doodles are described by their owners as having wavy medium length moderate or low shedding coats – like these dogs.

Buddy (looking so smug on the beach in Hawaii – and who wouldn’t)  has a shaggy coat which I suspect has been trimmed a bit for the climate.

Dougie (lower left) is a typical shaggy ‘doodle and Leo Black (below)is very shaggy (and very cute).

Their owners report that these dogs have non shedding coats.

Reilly (above) – pictured as a pup on the home page – has a soft long non shedding wavy coat.  It is this sort of coat which has inspired people to breed labradoodles for their coat type. Reilly’s coat occurs only rarely in F1 dogs.  Ralph has a similar coat  - shorter at least at this age. Reilly and Ralph live in Toowoomba. Their coat sobviously needs regular grooming but are not clipped.

Another coat type the long curly coat like Ruperts (right) coat or Oscars (below with his adopted sister Lucinda - yes they are the same “breed”). Seen here as pups these are very similar to poodle coats – soft and wavy and likely to fall into dreadlocks. The coat matts easily. These coats are usually cut off completely because of the matting which makes any other clip very difficult and expensive. They grow back coats very similar to an adult poodle but perhaps a bit slower growing and sometimes less curly.

Oscar looks sad in the photo– probably because he knew what the groomer was planning to do to him!  Don’t EVER let your groomer leave the ears, head and tail long!

Rupert, Oscar and Lucinda all went to live in Melbourne and when they had grown they met in a park .

The dogs on the left are the same three dogs as adults.

They are extremely muddy after a typical doodle get together.

The interesting thing is that they look far more similar as adults than they were as pups.

Lucinda and Rupert have faded in colour, Lucinda’s coat looks softer and shaggier. Rupert is still “preclipping” with dreadlocks (see page 1 for post clipping) and Oscar has recovered from his poodle attack and has an even woolly coat.

They do now look as if they are related!
